The Art Behind Every PaintForU Portrait

When you commission a custom portrait from PaintForU, you're not just buying a product — you're investing in a handcrafted work of art created by skilled professionals. Here's an inside look at exactly how your photograph becomes a painting.

Step 1: Photo Review and Artist Assignment

The moment your order arrives, our art director reviews your reference photo and custom instructions. Based on your chosen style (oil, watercolour, or pencil sketch), we assign the artist whose specialisation best matches your vision.

Each artist in our network has years of formal training and professional experience. They're selected not just for technical skill, but for their ability to capture emotion and personality.

Step 2: Canvas Preparation

Before any paint touches canvas, preparation is essential:

  • Canvas selection — premium cotton or Belgian linen, depending on the commission
  • Stretching — canvas is hand-stretched over kiln-dried wooden bars to prevent warping
  • Priming — two coats of gesso applied and sanded smooth for optimal paint adhesion
  • Sketch transfer — the composition is lightly sketched in charcoal or pencil

Step 3: The Underpainting

The underpainting establishes the tonal foundation of the portrait. Using thin washes of burnt umber and raw sienna, the artist blocks in shadows, mid-tones, and highlights. This monochromatic layer guides every subsequent colour decision.

Step 4: Building Colour

This is where the magic happens. Working from dark to light, background to foreground, the artist builds colour in multiple layers:

  • Background first — establishing depth and atmosphere
  • Clothing and context — fabrics, settings, and props
  • Skin tones — the most complex element, requiring dozens of mixed colours
  • Eyes and expression — saved for last, as this is the emotional core of every portrait
Each layer needs drying time between applications. Oil paint dries through oxidation, not evaporation, which is why the process takes 1–2 weeks.

Step 5: Detail and Refinement

With the major elements in place, the artist turns to the fine details that bring a portrait to life:

  • Individual hair strands catching light
  • The subtle sheen in the eyes
  • Fabric textures and folds
  • Background elements and atmospheric effects
This stage often takes as long as the initial painting — it's where good portraits become great ones.

Step 6: Your Digital Preview

Once the artist is satisfied, we photograph the painting in controlled lighting and send you a high-resolution digital preview. This is your opportunity to request any changes — adjustments to colour, expression, background, or composition.

We offer unlimited free revisions. Most clients are delighted with the first preview, but we're always happy to fine-tune until the portrait is exactly right.

Step 7: Finishing and Protection

After final approval, the painting receives:

  • Protective varnish — a satin-finish varnish that protects against UV light, dust, and moisture while enhancing colour depth
  • Edge finishing — the gallery-wrap technique continues the painting around the canvas edges
  • Quality inspection — our art director reviews every piece before shipping

Step 8: Professional Packaging and Shipping

Your portrait is carefully packaged in custom-built protective materials:

  • Corner protectors and foam padding
  • Double-walled cardboard outer box
  • "Fragile" and "This Side Up" markings
  • Full insurance and tracking
We ship worldwide, and every painting arrives ready to hang with pre-installed hardware.
