The Short Answer

A custom portrait painting from PaintForU typically takes 3 to 5 weeks from the moment you place your order to the day it arrives at your door. That includes everything — artist assignment, painting, your approval, finishing, and shipping.

But that number doesn't tell the full story. The timeline depends on several factors: the style you choose, the complexity of the composition, the size of the canvas, and even the time of year. Below, we break down every stage so you know exactly what to expect — and how to plan around it.

The Complete Timeline: Stage by Stage

Every PaintForU commission follows a structured process designed to balance craftsmanship with efficiency. Here is what happens at each step.

Stage 1: Order Confirmation & Artist Assignment (1–2 Days)

Once you submit your order and reference photo, our art director reviews the image quality and your customisation notes. Your commission is then assigned to the artist whose style and expertise best match your request.

If your reference photo needs attention — say it is too dark, low-resolution, or heavily filtered — our team will reach out within 24 hours with suggestions. This avoids delays later in the process.

Stage 2: Sketching & Composition (2–3 Days)

Before any paint touches the canvas, your artist creates a preliminary composition sketch. This step establishes the proportions, framing, and placement of every element in your portrait. For multi-subject pieces or complex backgrounds, this phase may take an extra day.

The sketch phase is invisible to most customers, but it is arguably the most important. A well-planned composition is the foundation of a beautiful painting.

Stage 3: Painting (7–14 Days)

This is where the magic happens — and where most of the time goes. Your artist builds the portrait layer by layer, working from broad colour blocks to fine details like eyelashes, fur texture, and fabric folds.

Oil paintings are the most time-intensive because they require drying time between layers. An artist might paint the background and skin tones one day, wait for them to set, then return to add highlights and details the next. Rushing this process causes colours to muddy and textures to blur.

Watercolour portraits move faster because each wash dries relatively quickly, but they demand precision — there is no painting over mistakes in watercolour. One wrong stroke can mean starting again.

Pencil sketches are the quickest to produce. There is no drying time, and the medium allows for rapid, confident mark-making. A skilled artist can complete a detailed pencil portrait in 3–5 days.

Stage 4: Digital Preview & Revisions (1–5 Days)

Once the painting reaches a near-finished state, we photograph it in controlled lighting and send you a high-resolution digital preview for approval. This is your chance to request changes — adjust the background colour, refine a facial feature, or tweak the overall mood.

Revisions are free and unlimited at PaintForU. Most customers approve on the first or second preview, but we will keep refining until you are completely satisfied.

The preview stage typically takes 1–2 days if you approve quickly. Each round of revisions adds 2–3 additional days depending on the scope of the changes.

Stage 5: Finishing & Protective Coating (2–3 Days)

After final approval, the artist applies the finishing touches and seals the painting with a professional-grade satin varnish. This coating serves two purposes:

  1. Protection — It shields the paint surface from dust, moisture, UV light, and minor abrasions.
  2. Visual enhancement — It evens out the sheen across the painting, making colours appear richer and more vibrant.
For oil paintings, the varnish needs 24–48 hours to cure before the painting can be safely handled and packaged.

Stage 6: Packaging & Shipping (5–7 Business Days)

Your finished portrait is carefully wrapped in acid-free tissue paper, cushioned with protective foam corners, and placed in a custom-fit shipping box. Every painting is shipped with full tracking and insurance.

Standard shipping takes 5–7 business days for domestic deliveries and 7–14 business days for international orders. Express Shipping is available as an add-on if you need your painting sooner.

What Affects the Timeline?

Not every portrait takes the same amount of time. Here are the variables that can shorten or extend your timeline.

Number of Subjects

A single-subject portrait is faster than a multi-person family piece. Each additional subject adds complexity to the composition, proportions, and colour relationships. A group portrait with four or more people can add 5–7 days to the painting stage.

Level of Detail

A head-and-shoulders portrait with a simple background is significantly faster than a full-body composition in an elaborate setting. Detailed elements like jewellery, uniforms, landscapes, or pets alongside their owners all add time.

Canvas Size

Larger canvases simply take longer to paint. An 8×10 inch portrait might take a week, while a 24×36 inch canvas could require two full weeks of painting time. More surface area means more brushstrokes, more layers, and more drying time.

Painting Style

As noted above, oil paintings are the slowest due to drying requirements, followed by watercolours, then pencil sketches. If speed is a priority and you are flexible on style, a pencil sketch is the fastest option.

Revision Rounds

Most customers approve their preview on the first try or request minor tweaks that take 1–2 days. Occasionally, a customer wants more significant changes — a different background, altered expression, or colour adjustments — which can extend the timeline by a week or more.

Seasonal Demand

The holiday season (November through January), Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Father's Day are our busiest periods. During these times, our studio operates at full capacity and timelines may extend by 1–2 weeks. We strongly recommend ordering at least 6–8 weeks ahead of any gift-giving deadline during these periods.

How to Speed Things Up

If you are working with a tight deadline, here are practical ways to accelerate the process:

  1. Submit a high-quality photo from the start. Photo issues are the number one cause of delays. A clear, well-lit image at full resolution means your artist can begin immediately without back-and-forth.
  2. Provide detailed instructions up front. The more specific you are about background colour, composition, and style preferences, the less likely you will need extensive revisions later.
  3. Choose Express Preview. Our Express Preview add-on prioritises your commission in the studio queue, reducing the time to your first preview by several days.
  4. Respond quickly to your preview. The preview stage only takes as long as it takes you to review and approve. Check your email promptly and provide clear, actionable feedback.
  5. Add Express Shipping. Cut delivery time in half with our Express Shipping option, available at checkout.
  6. Consider a pencil sketch. If the occasion suits it, pencil sketches are the fastest style to produce — often completed in under two weeks including shipping.

Why Good Art Takes Time

In a world of instant downloads and next-day delivery, waiting 3–5 weeks for a painting can feel unusual. But that timeline is what separates a hand-painted portrait from a mass-produced print.

Every layer of paint needs time to dry. Every detail — the catch of light in an eye, the texture of a wool scarf, the subtle shift from shadow to highlight on a cheekbone — requires patience and precision. Rushing the process compromises the result.

When your painting finally arrives, it carries the weight of that time and attention. It is not just a picture on a wall. It is a piece of art that was created, layer by layer, specifically for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a custom portrait painting take from start to finish?

A standard custom portrait painting takes approximately 3 to 5 weeks from the moment you place your order to the day it arrives at your door. This includes 1–2 days for artist assignment, 7–10 days for the initial painting and digital preview, time for revisions if needed, 3–5 days for finishing and drying, and 5–7 business days for shipping.

Can I get a custom painting done faster?

Yes. PaintForU offers an Express Preview add-on that prioritises your commission, reducing the preview timeline by several days. Express Shipping is also available to shorten delivery times. Contact our team if you have a firm deadline and we will do our best to accommodate it.

What factors affect how long my painting takes?

The main factors are complexity (number of subjects, detail level, background intricacy), painting style (oil paintings take longer to dry than pencil sketches), canvas size (larger canvases require more painting time), revisions (each round of changes adds a few days), and seasonal demand (holiday periods may extend timelines).

Do oil paintings take longer than watercolours or pencil sketches?

Generally yes. Oil paintings require longer drying times between layers — a process that cannot be rushed without compromising quality. Watercolours and pencil sketches typically have shorter production windows because they dry faster or require no drying time at all.

Will I see a preview before the painting is finished?

Absolutely. Every PaintForU commission includes a free digital preview sent to you for approval before the painting is finalised. You can request unlimited revisions at this stage at no extra cost, ensuring the final artwork is exactly what you envisioned.

How far in advance should I order a portrait for a gift?

We recommend ordering at least 5–6 weeks before you need the painting. For holiday periods like Christmas, Valentine's Day, or Mother's Day, order 6–8 weeks ahead to account for higher volumes. If you are ordering last minute, our Express options can help — but the earlier you order, the better.
